Our story / The company behind ABIE

Buildings have
stories to tell.

The name GRIOTech draws inspiration from the griot: a keeper and communicator of knowledge, connecting experience with understanding.

Buildings have histories of their own. Their operating data reveals how equipment behaves, how performance changes and where opportunities emerge.

GRIOTech brings together building-controls engineering, energy management, analytics and software development to interpret that history and explain what needs attention.

Leadership

The people behind
the intelligence.

GRIOTech combines practical engineering knowledge with experience in building controls, energy management and operational analytics.

Horace Cyrus

Founder

Horace is the founder of GRIOTech and the driving force behind the vision, architecture and development of ABIE.

With more than 25 years in building services engineering and an earlier background in industrial instrumentation, his career spans building controls, energy management, advanced analytics and technology innovation.

Previously Head of Connected Systems & Data Driven Services at Chartwell Controls, Horace conceived and led the development of in-Sites, a building-analytics platform that remains in operation today.

Ben Verrell

Technical Director

Ben is Technical Director and a founding member of GRIOTech, where he plays an instrumental role in the engineering development and delivery of ABIE.

An MEng graduate in General Engineering from the University of Leicester, Ben brings specialist experience in BMS controls, energy optimisation, analytics integration and automated fault detection.

Previously part of Chartwell Controls' Connected Systems & Data Driven Services team, he made significant technical contributions to the development and deployment of the in-Sites analytics platform.

Five disciplines, one approach

Engineering first.
Intelligence by design.

01

Controls

Understanding real equipment behaviour, control sequences, building-management systems and operational constraints.

02

Mechanical engineering

Understanding HVAC plant, thermodynamics, fluid systems and the physical relationships that determine how equipment delivers its service.

03

Energy management

Evaluating energy use against demand, identifying inefficiencies and establishing credible improvement opportunities.

04

Data analytics

Connecting operational data, physical relationships and performance assessments to reveal what individual readings cannot explain.

05

Software development

Making engineering methods repeatable, accessible and scalable across individual buildings and entire portfolios.

Our experience

The work behind
the thinking.

Our leadership brings practical engineering experience across complex commercial buildings and multi-site estates.

Their work spans controls optimisation, energy management, operational analytics and fault detection — across offices, airports, data centres, two government buildings, residential developments, major commercial banking facilities and multi-building thermal networks.

Why we built ABIE

Making specialist
understanding scalable.

Discover ABIE

Experienced engineers can interpret operational data, investigate connected systems and establish what needs attention. But applying that understanding continuously across entire buildings and portfolios is a different challenge.

Performance changes between inspections. Inefficiencies become accepted operating conditions, and valuable engineering knowledge remains fragmented across systems, reports and individuals.

GRIOTech created ABIE to change that — bringing engineering-based measurement, evidence qualification, contextual reasoning and clear communication into one connected platform.
